Ferric Chloride

Ferric Chloride (FeCl₃), also known as Iron(III) Chloride, is an orange to dark brown crystalline solid widely used as a coagulant in water and wastewater treatment. It is slightly soluble in water, forming a highly acidic solution that effectively destabilizes suspended particles and contaminants. When in contact with moisture, it becomes corrosive to aluminum and many metals, requiring careful handling and proper storage.

Ferric Chloride is valued for its strong coagulation and flocculation properties, making it essential for removing turbidity, heavy metals, organic matter, and phosphates. It reacts quickly, forms dense flocs, and performs efficiently across a broad pH range. Besides water treatment, it also finds industrial uses in electronics, pigments, and chemical synthesis due to its oxidizing and catalytic properties.

Application:

  • Widely used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment as a coagulant
  • Helps remove suspended solids, heavy metals, phosphates, and organic impurities
  • Used in drinking water treatment for turbidity and color reduction
  • Essential in etching processes for printed circuit boards (PCB) in electronics
  • Acts as a catalyst in chemical manufacturing and dye production
  • Used in pigment formation and as a mordant in textile industries
  • Applied in odor control and sludge conditioning in treatment plants
